Watch the distance to the edge, not the cat. The number of steps between the cat and the nearest edge tells you how urgent each move is.
Avoid forks. If the cat reaches a tile next to two open edge tiles, you can only block one and it takes the other. Prevent that before it happens.
Block ahead, not beside. A barrier right next to the cat often just makes it step around. One or two tiles along its route usually does more.
Extend walls instead of scattering dots. Link your new barrier to existing obstacles so you build solid lines.
Think in regions. Aim to seal off whole sides of the board and shrink the area the cat can roam.
